Automotive cables are used in the low voltage 12/24v harness assemblies fitted to domestic and commercial vehicles, yachts and other craft requiring a DC supply. The original UK specification that the cables were manufactured to was BS6862 which had a maximum operating temperature of +70c. In recent years automotive cables have been produced to the international ISO spec 6722, this cable is known as Thin Wall cable due to its reduced radial wall thickness. A hard grade PVC is used which boosts the operating temperature to +105c which make it ideally suitable for under bonnet applications. Automotive cables are manufactured using stranded copper conductors and are available in a range of sizes and colour typically from 0.5mm² up to 16mm² in single core. A range of multi-core automotive cables are also available for when it is beneficial to have a number of cables routed together, for example a lighting circuit for a trailer.
